David Ascani quintet

The David Ascani Quintet is a jazz band founded by jazz saxophonist and composer David Ascani in 2019. The first time they met was during the recording for their debut Album Invisible. From the first day on, the musical and the human level was perfect. Coming from Luxembourg, Germany and the Netherlands, the band plays in a traditional jazz line-up with a progressive attitude and a modern sound using rich harmonies, gentle melodies, where the soft tones cross the climax.

David Ascani

David Ascani, born in 1990, is a young luxembourgish saxophonist and composer. He started playing the saxophone at the age of 6. Since then it was clear that music would make up his life. In 2014 he started his studies at the Hochschule für Musik Saar (D) with Georg Ruby, Wollie Kaiser and Oliver Strauch. His playing is powerful and extremely delicate at the same time. As a composer, the music of David Ascani is modern, without forgetting the roots of jazz.

Koen Smits

Koen Smits (1991) is a trumpet player who likes to improvise in small groups and work hard in larger ensembles. The improvising part he likes most is with his trio “Mudita”. Their debut CD “Listen To The Sound Of The Forest” was awarded with an Edison (Dutch Grammy). Koen also likes to play in professional jazz-related ensembles, big bands and isn’t afraid to try something new.

Simon Below

The 25-year old Jazz-Pianist Simon Below began playing the piano early in his life (at age of 4, taking up drums at 12). As a teenager he discovered jazz. From 2014 to 2019, he studied jazz at the „Hochschule für Musik“ in Cologne. Prof. Hubert Nuss and Prof. Hendrik Soll were his most important teachers. In 2016 he found his own quartet. The band won several prizes (e.g. the international Avignon Jazz-price, ("Tremplin Jazz D'Avignon"), "Werner Richard - Carl Dörken scholarship"). In 2017 he won the "Steinway-Förderpreis NRW". Since 2018 Simon is member of the „Live-Music-Now“ society.

Luca Müller

Luca Müller was born in 1997 near Cologne and started his musical development at a young age with classical piano and singing as well as electric bass classes. This led to several newcomer awards and eventually, he was introduced to the double bass. In 2016 he was accepted for Jazz studies at Folkwang University of Arts. As a member of the Youth Jazz Orchestra NRW and National Youth Jazz Orchestra (BuJazzO) he travelled through several countries and worked together with regionally and internationally well-known jazz musicians. His strong adaptability and diverse musical language as well as an energetic, impulsive play style, define his artistic message and make Luca Müller one of the most sought-after aspiring musicians of the German scene.

Niels Engel

In the rather short span of one decade, drummer/percussionist and composer Niels Engel has established himself as an artist of great profundity and flexibility. Having toured and recorded with many artists in/and outside of Luxembourg, he has proven his ability to adapt his hybrid musical approach to any occasion or circumstance, and in the same time maintain his own unique and characteristic voice in this vast world of modern drummers.
